DAILY NFL PLAYER UPDATE #14 07/13/2009

Browns- Ahtyba Rubin
The Browns' new coaching staff "appears" to be intrigued with second-year NT Ahtyba Rubin.
A sixth-round pick in '08, Rubin is a holdover from the Phil Savage/Romeo Crennel era but has the size (6'2/330) to play nose tackle in Cleveland's 3-4. Rubin could overtake Shaun Smith to be Shaun Rogers' primary backup.

Packers- Ryan Grant
Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin wants to run more this season.
"I'd love to see us run 32-34 times a game where we need to split up the carries a little better," said Philbin. "We need to get it up in the 30s on a consistent basis." This sounds nice, but Mike McCarthy calls the shots and has typically ran a pass-first offense. Green Bay's best talent is also in the passing game. Expect the Pack to stay in the top ten in pass attempts.

Jaguars- Daryl Smith
The Jaguars have moved Daryl Smith from middle linebacker to the weak side. Clint Ingram will start on the strong side this season.
Justin Durant is now in the middle of what should be the Jags' strength on defense. Smith is a quality player and a threat for 80 tackles, but Durant is the IDP to target here. Durant should top 100 stops and make more big plays.

Falcons- Michael Vick
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to decide whether or not to uphold free agent Michael Vick's indefinite suspension roughly three weeks after he's released from home confinement.
Vick's sentence ends two Mondays from now. There was a report in late June that Goodell might not allow Vick to play at all this season. No teams are going to pursue him seriously until they find out whether he's eligible.

Jaguars- Tiquan Underwood
Jaguars.com writer Vic Ketchman believes that seventh-round receiver Tiquan Underwood could turn out to be a "home run type" of draft pick.
Ketchman is not biased like almost all team website writers, so we'd take his opinion more seriously than most. Underwood was highly impressive in non-contact OTA practices. Now he'll have to do it when the pads go on.

Jets- Brett Favre
Citing a source with knowledge of the situation, Profootballtalk.com reports that free agent Brett Favre is unlikely to sign with the Vikings until closer to the start of training camp.
PFT editor Mike Florio suggests Favre might be trying to squeeze more money out of the franchise. The Vikings have given up leverage by pursuing Favre so intently, although they do have two quarterbacks on the roster with starting experience and aren't competing with any other teams. Still, it would be ideal to get Favre signed before season tickets go on sale July 20.
