Asomugha a Jet? Fellow CB Revis would highly approve of that

The New York Jets already have one shutdown cornerback. Darrelle Revis says they should try to make it two.

Nnamdi Asomugha is considered the top player available among this year's free agents, and Rex Ryan surely would love to add another dominant player to his secondary. The Jets, who reached an agreement with wide receiver Santonio Holmes early Wednesday, also are in serious negotiations with Asomugha.

That would be fine with Revis, the New York Daily News first reported via Twitter on Wednesday.

"He's the best cornerback in the league," said Revis, who often has been labeled as such by others around the league. "Me and him as a tandem would be unbelievable. It would be awesome.

The NFL free agency cycle is in full effect, with teams and players agreeing to terms fast as training camps open. Get the latest on all the news right here.

"I would love to have him as a teammate."

Talk about a ringing endorsement. And talk about a nightmare for opposing offenses. Revis and Asomugha are considered by many to be the top cornerbacks in the league, and teams would have a difficult time challenging a secondary with those two roaming around.

Revis said if Asomugha signs with the Jets, "our pass defense is going to be sky high."

But New York isn't the only team hot after Asomugha, who will command a huge contract as he did while with the Oakland Raiders. If they can't land Asomugha, the Jets could turn their attention back to Antonio Cromartie, one of their own free agents who had a solid season in 2010 after being acquired from the San Diego Chargers.

"We all know this is a business," said Revis, who missed training camp last summer while embroiled in a bitter contract holdout before signing.

A few things working in the Jets' favor, though, are the facts that Revis and Asomugha are friends who have openly talked about how fun it would be to play together, and that Asomugha reportedly would like to get into acting after his playing career. New York could be attractive to him for that reason, too.

"Everybody would love to see him as a member of their team," Revis said. "I would want to see it. Hopefully, it happens."

Revis wouldn't bite when asked which of the two -- Asomugha or Cromartie -- he would prefer to play with if given the choice. He said he recently spoke to Asomugha but not to "recruit" him.

"We've always spoke as friends, but we even spoke about it at the Pro Bowl, about playing on the same team," Revis said. "Nnamdi, he knows where he wants to play and what's the best fit for him and what he wants to do with his career."

Revis also said he would accept wide receiver Randy Moss if the team went out and signed him. The two have made comments about each other in the past, especially while Moss was on the New England Patriots, and Revis called him "a slouch" for his lack of effort at times.

"Randy, you respect a guy like him," Revis said. "Words are words. We know sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you."

Revis' hamstring back to full strength as Jets plan for Packers

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Darrelle Revis is ready to shut down receivers -- and questions about his balky left hamstring.

The New York Jets' All-Pro cornerback declared himself healthy Monday after using the bye-week break to rehabilitate it at the team's facility.

"It felt great today," Revis said after a light practice. "Now I can settle in and just play football. I'm 100 percent."

Revis said he'll be able to play unimpeded in the Jets' next game at home against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

"I'm ready to go," he said. "I'll be there Sunday. We did everything we could this week. This week worked out for me to stay here and get all the treatment I needed to get."

Revis missed two games after straining the hamstring, was very sore when he returned against the Minnesota Vikings two weeks ago and still wasn't completely healthy last week against the Denver Broncos.

"He was moving around great today," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "I think we're going to see Darrelle at 100 percent, so that's exciting for me."

Revis received treatment on the hamstring and went through running drills and defensive backs drills during last week's six-day break. He said he had no swelling in the hamstring or any complications.

"I was here all week, just trying to get back and get this hamstring right," he said. "We did a couple of running drills, DB drills when I was here last week. We've been doing everything. I've been running."

Jets CB Revis, LB Pace will go to Denver, but status uncertain

Darrelle Revis and Calvin Pace are coming along for the ride.

Whether the New York Jets' defensive stars play in Denver against the Broncos on Sunday is still up in the air.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said Thursday that he wants both players to travel with the team Friday rather than have them stay back at the facility to rehabilitate their injuries. They will be evaluated after the 4-hour flight and the team's walkthrough Saturday.

Jets WR Santonio Holmes denied that he told a former sports agent during a recruiting visit five years ago that he already was taking money from another agent. More ...

"After talking to Darrelle and all that, we're going to take him to Denver, one way or the other, because he wants to be with his team, whether he can play or not," Ryan said. "And that's where I want him, also. Hopefully he'll be ready to play."

When asked if the same plan stood for Pace, Ryan said: "Yeah, both of them will make the trip."

Revis and Pace were limited at practice Thursday after not participating in team drills Wednesday.

"So," Ryan said, "that's an improvement from yesterday."

Revis played in the Jets' 29-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night, but he said his left hamstring was "very sore" and bothered him throughout the game. He had been sidelined two games with a strained hamstring.

"He looked good today," Ryan said. "Again, though, it's too early to say he's definitely going to play. I'm still not comfortable with that."

Ryan and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine both said the defense will prepare as if Revis will not play, although the All-Pro cornerback practiced a lot with the first-team unit Wednesday. Ryan added that it's possible the Jets could use Revis in a limited role against the Broncos, rather than have him sit out completely.

"If that's what we think ends up being the best thing for us and the best thing for Darrelle, absolutely," the coach said.

Pace made his regular-season debut Monday after missing the first four games with a broken right foot. He was extremely sore Wednesday, but he said he'll be fine to play.

"He felt good today," Ryan said. "Yesterday, he was probably worse than Darrelle. That's how sore he was, but he did really well today, did exactly what was asked."

The Jets have a bye after their game against the Broncos.

Ryan didn't mince words when asked about the matchup between the Jets' offense and Revis' counterpart, Champ Bailey, who will try to stifle New York's 25th-ranked passing offense.

"Champ Bailey is a heck of a player. He used to be the best corner of the league, now he's probably 2 or 3. But we have the No. 1 guy, I think Champ will tell you."

Jets CB Revis uncertain for next game with 'sore' hamstring

Darrelle Revis' balky left hamstring is acting up again.

The New York Jets cornerback said his leg was "very sore" after the team's victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night. Jets coach Rex Ryan wasn't sure Tuesday if Revis will play against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

It hasn't been pretty, but coach Rex Ryan and the Jets are 4-1 to start the season. Now Calvin Pace and Santonio Holmes are back, so the team expects even better things. More ...

"There was added swelling in his leg," Ryan said, "but hopefully he'll be ready to roll."

Revis returned Monday night after missing two games with a strained hamstring, sustained in the first half of the Jets' 28-14 victory over the New England Patriots in Week 2. He said after New York's 29-20 victory over Minnesota that the hamstring bothered him throughout the game.

"As of right now, we're going to take it day by day, like we've been doing, and see how it goes," Revis told the New York Daily News after the game.

"This process is kind of frustrating, because I've never been hurt during the season," Revis added. "I want to be out there so bad with my teammates and win games. I need to learn patience right now and get back to 100 percent. ... When that happens, I can play the type of ball that I can play."

Ryan said he was unaware that Revis' hamstring was a problem during the game.

"I thought just the opposite," Ryan said. "I thought about challenging him more. I never saw it."

Ryan added that he hadn't spoken to Revis as of early Tuesday afternoon. Ryan also said the team wouldn't rest Revis this week just because its bye is the following week, giving the cornerback more time to recover.

"If he's healthy, we want to play Darrelle," Ryan said. "It's not vacation time. It's time to beat somebody. This is an AFC opponent and we need to win games so we can get into the postseason. That would be my thought. Is he going to be better three weeks from now if we don't play him or all that? I think that still has to be determined."

Ryan insisted that the team didn't rush Revis back and said the wet conditions during the game played no factor in the decision to let him play.

"We wouldn't have put him out there if we didn't think he was healthy," Ryan said. "We thought he was healthy, ready to play. I think he felt he was healthy, ready to play."

Revis wasn't up to his best against the Vikings, as the Jets used cornerback Antonio Cromartie on new Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss. Meanwhile, Revis mostly defended Percy Harvin and Greg Lewis in what Ryan called a "decent football game" by his star player.

"For the standards of Darrelle Revis, let's face it, we expect him to go out, and if this was golf, we expect him to birdie every hole," Ryan said. "That's the truth. Now, if he has a couple of par and a bogey every now and then, what's wrong with Revis, you know what I mean? But hopefully, this injury is not that big a deal."

Revis: Moss sometimes plays 100 percent, sometimes doesn't

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Darrelle Revis is ready to play, and you can bet Randy Moss hopes the New York Jets' All-Pro cornerback is out there defending him Monday night.

Revis added another chapter to their personal rivalry Wednesday, saying Moss -- now with the Minnesota Vikings -- eased up in the second half of New England's 28-14 loss to New York three weeks ago.

"He came out full force, early in the game," Revis said. "In the second half, you could tell he was kind of like putting his foot on the brake. But everybody knows that's Randy: Sometimes he plays 100 percent, sometimes he doesn't."

Revis was limited at practice Wednesday, but he hopes to play after missing the last 2½ games with a strained left hamstring. He was injured while defending Moss on a touchdown catch late in the first half of the Week 2 game.

"You can see the effort," Revis said. "Playing football, you can see the body language and the effort of people when they're out there playing, if a guy's going hard or if a guy's hesitant."

Moss, traded Wednesday by the Patriots, was held without a catch in the second half while he was defended mostly by Antonio Cromartie. Revis believes Moss' lack of effort was the primary reason for that blanking.

"That's just the way football is," Revis said. "You can see the truth comes out. I don't know if it was frustration of him not getting the ball a lot or whatever, but you can see it."

Revis referred to Moss as a "slouch" while playing a word-association game on NFL Network in January. Moss playfully fired back during an interview with ESPN before the Patriots played the Jets, saying: "I don't really get into the trash-talking, but if what he called me was a 'slouch,' then I guess the 'slouch' will be there to see you on Sunday."

Whether or not the matchup even happens Monday night isn't certain, given Revis' health. He said he felt great -- "no pulls or anything today" -- after practice, then reiterated that he wants to be 100 percent healthy before playing again.

"I want to play right now," Revis said. "But I know they wouldn't be letting me play if the game were today."

Jets coach Rex Ryan said it's too early to tell if Revis will play and, if so, where he'll line up -- on his usual left side, the right side or even in the slot.

"We'll see," Ryan said. "He moved out there pretty well today."

Revis heard the rumors of an impending trade between the Patriots and Vikings for Moss while checking Twitter late Tuesday night.

"A lot of the fans were coming at me a little bit on Twitter, saying I better get my hamstring ready for Monday night against Randy again," Revis said. "Hopefully, if I get to play Monday, I get to see him sooner than I thought I would."

Revis also might have added some bulletin-board material for the Patriots.

"I was surprised that New England would do something like that, because he's a big part of their offense," he said. "I don't think they're going to have a vertical game."

The Jets play the Patriots in Foxborough, Mass., on Dec. 6 -- also a Monday night game.
