Bills Fire Jauron After Dismal 3-6 Start

"The Buffalo Bills fired coach Dick Jauron today, team owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr. told The News.

"It's the toughest thing I ever had to do personally because he's such a great guy," Wilson said. "But nothing ever seemed to go right."

The move comes in the wake of Sunday's 41-17 loss at Tennessee, which dropped the Bills to 3-6 on the season.

"He's just a great guy, and I feel very bad about it," Wilson said. "But I think it's best for the team and the fans and everybody."

It's expected that either defensive coordinator Perry Fewell or assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Bobby April will take over."

Goodell to allow Vick To Sign With A Team

"Michael Vick could be on his way back to the NFL if a team signs him before, during or following a four-game suspension levied by Commissioner Roger Goodell.

ESPN.com reported Thursday that Goodell issued a conditional reinstatement for the suspended former Falcons quarterback that will allow Vick to attend training camp if he signs with a team, but will still suspend Vick for the first four games of the 2009 season.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, however, told The Associated Press on Thursday no decisions on Vick's future have been made.

"This is a serious matter," Aiello said in an e-mail. "We are engaging in a careful and thoughtful process."

Vick, fresh from serving 23-months in federal prison for dogfighting, met with Goodell Wednesday, hoping to restart his NFL career, according to published reports.

The two met Wednesday afternoon in Allendale, N.J., ESPN.com reported, citing a unnamed league source.

Sport Illustrated reported on its Web site that Vick and Goodell were seen departing from Buckley Petersen Global Inc. around 4 p.m.

Vick left in a Cadillac Escalade; Goodell in a BMW 10 minutes later, according to SI.com. Eyewitnesses described the two as having "somber" looks on their faces.

Aiello declined to confirm the meeting when contacted by The AP.

On Tuesday, Vick met one-on-one with NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith.

That same day Goodell, who suspended Vick indefinitely, said he'll make a decision "in the near future" on reinstating him.

In order for Goodell to reinstate Vick, he must show remorse and convince him and the public that he is reformed.

The animal rights group PETA issued a statement Thursday reiterating its resistance to Vick rejoining the NFL unless he first undergoes a psychological evaluation."

Chargers- Clinton Hart
Chargers SS Clinton Hart blames his struggles in 2008 on playing hurt.

Hart did break a bone in his hand in September and seemed to never get over a Week 13 stinger, but blaming bad years on injury sure is common among San Diego defensive backs. After being relentlessly burnt by tight ends in 2008, Hart will have to hold off rookie Kevin Ellison to keep his job.

Falcons- Michael Vick
ESPN's Michael Smith reports that free agent Michael Vick's expected "conditional" return to the league would likely entail close monitoring by the NFL and a regimented program before any thoughts of full reinstatement.

The program could reportedly include regular drug testing and psychological evaluations, among other things. ESPN's Sal Paolantonio says Vick's camp is currently huddling to determine his approach for an upcoming meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell. Tony Dungy may be a part of that group.

Patriots- Jarvis Green
Patriots contract-year DE Jarvis Green attempted Wednesday to clarify a statement he made to a Louisiana newspaper, which he told he'd "love to come home and finish off as a Saint."

He was also quoted as saying, "this is my last year with the Patriots." "I don't think I said it like that," Green said Wednesday. "Me being from Louisiana and playing at LSU and...you say it would be a dream to play for the Saints. But I'd love to stay a Patriot." Green is due $2.9 million this season.

Seahawks- Owen Schmitt
Seahawks FB Owen Schmitt pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving in connection with his June arrest for suspicion of DUI.

Schmitt got a 365-day sentence, but 364 were suspended and he already spent one day in jail. Schmitt also must pay $2,130 in fines. We're guessing he won't be suspended as a first-time offender of the NFL conduct policy.

Vikings- Antoine Winfield
The agent for Vikings CB Antoine Winfield is en route to Minnesota to "apparently" close a new contract for his client.

Agent Ashanti Webb texted the St. Paul Pioneer Press Wednesday that he's "on (his) way to the Twin Cities now." Winfield, entering a contract year, has been asking for a new deal all offseason. He gained some leverage when the Vikes extended fellow CB Cedric Griffin, who is a much weaker player.

Falcons- Joe Horn
Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome has reportedly been in contact with former Saints and Falcons receiver Joe Horn.

Horn, 37, has been dying to get back in the NFL since Atlanta cut him in August of 2008. He's received very little interest, but Newsome reportedly plans to contact him after the Ravens try out Drew Bennett and D.J. Hackett, among others, on Friday. That Horn wasn't invited to the tryout is telling.

Raiders- Zach Miller
The Raiders anticipate Zach Miller getting more pass-catching opportunities with rookie Brandon Myers taking over the blocking tight end role.

Myers is viewed as a "block-and-release player" in two-tight end sets. Miller could line up in the slot more and be a matchup weapon versus safeties and linebackers. He's bound to improve on his 2008 numbers (56/778/1).

Are money issues holding up deal between Brett Favre and Minnesota Vikings?

"The longer it takes for the Vikings to announce that Brett Favre will be their quarterback next season, the more it appears that money is the holdup.

The Vikings plan to put single-game tickets on sale Monday. Favre's agent, Bus Cook, obviously knows that. He also knows if/when Favre's signing is announced, the Vikings will reap boatloads of new cash in ticket and apparel sales.

It's clear that Cook and Favre have enough leverage to extract at least a $10 million deal for the coming season, assuming Favre remains healthy. Ultimately, it's up to owner Zygi Wilf to determine Favre's worth to the Vikings, who certainly are justified in offering an incentive-laden contract.

Favre was paid $12 million last season by the New York Jets. If contract terms between the Vikings and Cook were right, the deal already would be done. Word is Favre wants to make sure his arm is fine before signing, but it wouldn't be surprising if it's Cook seeking more guarantees than incentives that's the holdup.

If Favre, who turns 40 in October, isn't signed by the Vikings' reporting date of July 29 (just 14 days away), it would seem unlikely he'll sign at all. Ultimately, it appears, both sides will have to make their best offer soon.

If Favre doesn't sign, and all that air goes out of the Vikings' balloon, it's a good bet it will be the money — and not his tender arm — that's the reason."

Suggs Agrees To Six-year, $63M Deal

"Terrell Suggs will sign a six-year, $63 million contract with the Ravens on Wednesday, completing one of the more lucrative deals in NFL history.

A three-time Pro Bowl linebacker, Suggs will receive $33 million in bonuses (a $10.1 million signing bonus and a $23 million option bonus due in March), which ranks second only to Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, who earned $34 million in bonuses. Suggs' total is believed to be the most ever for a defensive player.

Suggs, who repeatedly said the sides were close on a deal, will sign the contract before Wednesday at 4 p.m., the deadline for NFL teams to sign their franchise tag players to a long-term deal.

"The Ravens showed up big for me, now I have to show up big for them again," Suggs told The Baltimore Sun.

Suggs added, "I'm only 26 years of age, and my best years are ahead of me. I can only get smarter as my years of experience pile up. I wasn't sure this deal was going to get done even though I kept saying it was close. I thought the chances were about 50-50, and I definitely didn't want to get franchised again."

The sides made significant progress 2 1/2 weeks ago, when the Ravens increased the guaranteed money, a league source said. An agreement was reached around midnight Wednesday in a three-way call with Suggs, his agent and general manager Ozzie Newsome.

The Ravens will pay their top pass rusher $38 million in guaranteed money and $40 million over the first two years of the deal.

"This is a good day for the Ravens franchise," general manager Ozzie Newsome said."

Is Cassel the one player the Chiefs have sought all these years?

"The last true franchise quarterback to wear a Kansas City Chiefs jersey is already here, sitting where important men sit: in a nearly enclosed, oversized booth, watching waitresses with pleasant smiles hum by and men in business suits strain to catch his words.

"They've been unable to draft or develop a quarterback," Len Dawson says. "They've tried. They've just been unable."

This is how far back you have to look to catch a glimpse of what Matt Cassel might become: All the way to the 1960s and Lenny The Cool, he of the Super Bowl ring, the bronzed-tan glow of the good life, the loving looks of folks who remember winning ways and the special place you get to inhabit if you earn the mantle of franchise quarterback.

A franchise quarterback also happens to be the one ingredient any general manager hoping to play alchemist needs if he's to turn a 2-14 embarrassment into a winning organization.

"How important are franchise quarterbacks? You aren't successful without one!" Dick Vermeil says. "You get by, but you don't get better. You don't win big."

Former Chiefs center Tim Grunhard agrees: "That's what young people are looking for. They want a hero, a hero they can believe in, a guy they can go in the backyard and when they play football say, 'I'm Matt Cassel.' We've been told time and time again that these guys were going to come in, be the guy, be the face, be the resurrection of the Kansas City Chiefs. And it's never worked. Never."

Dawson was the last player to have come in, been the man, resurrected the franchise and brought home the trophy. Joe Montana was very good at the end of his career, and Trent Green put in five very fine - at times fantastic - full seasons. But Montana could only take the Chiefs to the AFC championship game, and Green led his team to only two winning seasons.

But those names don't matter anymore. One does: Matt Cassel, he of one good season in New England, a college career without a single start and a contract reportedly worth $63 million, designating him the guy who must lead this town's football team until at least 2014.

"He hit the mother lode, huh?" Dawson says with a raised eyebrow and quick smirk.

The old legend nods his head and lets his blue eyes go back in time to when he - like Cassel - hovered between obscurity and greatness. The smirk fades. Something closer to a man knowing how much luck plays a part in life emerges in its place.

"You've got to earn some respect," he says. "You've got to have some talent around you. You have to have some ability. You've got to have the chance to play."

Dawson wants to say how his story offers hope that Matt Cassel can be the real deal, but first we must acknowledge that the Chiefs' history since Dawson requires - to say the least - some cautious optimism.

Falcons- Matt Ryan
Matt Ryan "must have lived in the weight room all offseason," notes NFL.com's Pat Kirwan.

Ryan smartly pointed out that the strength Tom Brady added early in his career helped to make him one of the best in the game. Ryan is on the Brady/Peyton Manning career path as a cerebral quarterback who can make all the throws and has already demonstrated a fourth-quarter presence.

Bengals- Carson Palmer
Carson Palmer continues to show excitement over Chris Henry, telling NFL.com's Pat Kirwan that the receiver could be "on the verge of a Randy Moss-type career."

Henry has reportedly reformed his wayward ways and worked closely with Palmer for much of the offseason. We've often considered him a poor man's Randy Moss, but he's going to need a Laveranues Coles or Chad Ochocinco injury to accrue major fantasy value in 2009. He's certainly worth a Dynasty-league stash in the meantime.

Steelers- Willie parker
Willie Parker has reportedly been "attacking his offseason training regimen like he never has before."

"I'm getting that speed back like I had two or three years ago," Parker said recently. "I'm faster than I've been." Parker still isn't a great bet to stay healthy through 16 games, but a contract push will provide plenty of motivation in his effort to hold off Rashard Mendenhall.

Falcons- Michael Vick
Sources tell ESPN.com's John Clayton that Michael Vick doesn't want to play in Canada and "hasn't entertained any thoughts" of joining the UFL.

Vick is concentrating on an NFL return, and Clayton reports that commissioner Roger Goodell has received positive reports "from people he trusts." ESPN's Chris Mortensen predicts that Vick will formally request reinstatement within the next 24 to 48 hours.

Browns- Josh Cribbs
Josh Cribbs told a Cleveland radio station that he'll be there when Browns veterans report to training camp on July 31.

This differs from previous reports which said Cribbs had no plans to play under his current contract. Maybe this is Cribbs simply expressing optimism that his agent will work out a deal with the Browns when they meet this week.

Jets- Brett Favre
NFL.com is reporting that people close to Brett Favre expect him to decide on his playing status by Friday.

Favre's personal deadline is July 30, but it doesn't look like he'll wait that long to make an announcement. Virtually everyone assumes he will suit up for the Vikings this season. Favre must be convinced his surgically repaired arm is good to go - or maybe he just wants more attention.

Ryne Robinson is still the leading candidate to return punts and kicks for the Panthers this season.

Rookies Sherrod Martin, Captain Munnerlyn and Larry Beavers could battle for the job during training camp, but it's probably Robinson's to lose. He handled the duties for the Panthers in 2007 before hurting his knee last summer.

The player rep for Ronnie Brown says the Dolphins have approached him about an extension for the potential 2010 free agent.

The sides have had preliminary discussions which are expected to intensify during training camp. That the Dolphins are pursuing an extension shows they believe Brown is back to his pre-injury form. Raiders- Nnamdi Asomugha
Nnamdi Asomugha says the Raiders might let him shadow opposing No. 1 receivers under new coordinator John Marshall.

All last year the Raiders left Asomugha at right corner and gave whoever was at LCB (usually DeAngelo Hall or Chris Johnson) safety help over the top. Now that Asomugha is the league's richest defensive back, perhaps he'll be given more shadow coverage responsibilities. That could be bad news for intradivision rivals Dwayne Bowe, Vincent Jackson, and Brandon Marshall.

Redskins- Shaun Alexander
Free agent Shaun Alexander says he hasn't ruled out a return to the NFL.

The rest of the league has, but Alexander isn't ready to admit it. The 32-year old says he's had "preliminary talks with a few teams." Alexander spent part of last season with the Redskins, finishing with 11 carries for 24 yards.

Steelers- Heath Miller
Profootballtalk.com picked up recent "scuttlebut" that the Steelers could make Heath Miller a salary cap casualty.

PFT then contacted a source with "intimate knowledge" of the team's decision making, however, and found that there's no truth to it. First of all, the cap savings to slash Miller's $800K salary would be minimal. Secondly, Miller is one of the top-ten all-around tight ends in the game. And third, the Steelers have all along been more likely to extend Miller's deal than terminate it.

Ravens- Joe Flacco
Football Scientist K.C. Joyner says Joe Flacco was the most improved rookie in the league during the second half of 2008.

Joyner says Flacco's decision making and vertical passing improved sharply down the stretch despite a tougher schedule. This all sounds promising, but keep in mind that coordinator Cam Cameron rarely allowed Flacco to throw inside the numbers, dramatically reducing the risk of turnover. We'll see how good Flacco is this season, when he's (presumably) allowed full QB duty.

Jets- Brett Favre
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Vikings trainer Eric Sugarman flew to Hattiesburg, MS on Wednesday to meet with free agent Brett Favre.

It's Sugarman's second visit to check on Favre's physical state; the two also met in mid-June. A Vikings source tells the Star-Trib that Favre's May biceps surgery "was a complete success" and that his arm will be 100% by the start of training camp. There's next to no doubt he'll be a Viking before then.

Lions- Brandon Pettigrew
The Lions were reportedly "pretty happy" with rookie Brandon Pettigrew's showing during OTAs and minicamps.

Pettigrew made a few "outstanding grabs" and showed good focus and competitiveness. The Lions won't ease Pettigrew in; he's going to be an every down player on day one. Just don't expect more than mid-range TE2 value.

Bengals- Chase Coffman
Bengals rookie TE Chase Coffman says he's "very close to being 100 percent" recovered from his senior-year foot fracture.

Coffman was cleared for 11-on-11 minicamp drills in late June and says he's still building back muscle in his lower body. Considering his injury and lack of blocking experience, we're still not expecting much in Coffman's first year.

Lions sixth-round pick Aaron Brown reportedly showed explosiveness as a ball carrier during spring practices.

Cowboys- DeMarcus Ware
Cowboys OLB DeMarcus Ware expressed confidence Thursday that he'll be signing a long-term extension shortly.

Ware also confirmed that he won't hold out of training camp, despite entering a contract season. "(There's) nothing that's going to stop me from doing what I do best, and that's rush the passer and play well," said the reigning sacks leader. "There's no deadline at all. I picture myself a lifetime Cowboy."

Patriots- Wes Welker
Wes Welker recently changed agents from Vann McElroy to David Dunn of Athletes First.

Welker is signed through 2011, but he could easily argue that he's underpaid. No one has as many receptions over the last two years and Welker's '09 salary is just $1.65 million. He led the Pats in catches and receiving yards in 2008. Still, the the agent switch reportedly isn't aimed at getting a new deal.

Bears tight end coach Rob Boras said Greg Olsen will line up anywhere in the offense to try to create mismatches against a safety or linebacker.

All reports out of Chicago say Olsen and new QB Jay Cutler are working together well and are getting on the same page. Olsen is ultra-talented and has a real good chance at a breakout season.

Bucs wide receivers coach Richard Mann said that Brian Clark was the front-runner for the team's No. 3 WR job.

Giants- Brandon Jacobs
Giants RB Brandon Jacobs took a shot at Cowboys QB Tony Romo, saying "I don't think he's that good a passer, to be honest with you."

Jacobs made the comments on ESPN 1050 radio in New York. Everyone seems to be down on Romo these days, and Jacobs' words will only fan the flames of the rivalry.

Dolphins- Vontae Davis
Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland said that there had been just "preliminary discussions" about first-round pick Vontae Davis' contract.

Talks with second-round pick CB Sean Smith are expected to start this week. The Dolphins are building some nice depth in the defensive backfield. Most rookies taken in the first or second round won't be signed until training camp gets closer.

Seahawks- Walter Jones
Seahawks LT Walter Jones (microfracture surgery) was spotted running off to the side during minicamp.

According to Mike Sando of ESPN.com, Jones' biggest worry is his conditioning. Jones says the rehab on his knee is going well, but we'll have to wait until he gets some contact to be sure. He's obviously a key to the Seahawks' offense.

Chargers- Shawne Merriman
Shawne Merriman says he is not upset that the Chargers have failed to extend his contract, which will expire after this season.

Merriman's bum left knee has a lot to do with it, but it sounds like the Bolts haven't even brought up an extension. "I just turned 25...I don’t care about any of that stuff." Merriman said. "I just feel like all my work will pay off...and somebody is going to realize what I bring and give me what I want."

Packers- Ryan Grant
Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post expects "the '07 (Ryan) Grant" to return this season.

Lombardi is a former high-level personnel man and still watches tape, so his opinion is worth consideration. He suspects that Grant's YPC and number of long runs dwindled in 2008 because he was more concerned with getting a new contract than working hard. Grant also fumbled more and scored less.

Colts- Philip Wheeler
Philip Wheeler is currently the Colts' starting strong-side linebacker.

Middle man Gary Brackett and weak-side 'backer Clint Session are better IDP bets, but Wheeler has the most pass-rush ability of the three. He still won't get more than five sacks as a likely two-down player in Indy's 4-3 scheme.

Jaguars- Gerald Alexander
Newly acquired Jaguars SS Gerald Alexander is expected to compete for a starting job in training camp.

Jaguars.com points out that Jacksonville liked Alexander coming out of Boise State in 2007 and he passed his physical after a 2008 neck injury. Alexander could be a sleeper for 80-90 tackles if he beats out Sean Considine.

Giants- Michael Boley
NFL suspended Giants WLB Michael Boley one game for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

The Boley-Giants union is off to a rocky start. Signed to a $25 million deal that seemed like a steal in March, Boley has since torn the labrum in his hip and now won't be eligible until Week 2 at Dallas. Boley's status for the opener was already in question because he needed surgery, but discipline for his May 2008 battery charge guarantees he'll sit against the Redskins.

Giants- Bryan Kehl
Bryan Kehl and Gerris Wilkinson will likely battle in training camp to be the Giants' starting weak-side linebacker on opening day vs. Washington.

Wilkinson is more experienced, but Giants coaches seemed to prefer Kehl's aggressiveness when scrambling for weak-side help last year. Wilkinson has been an injury waiting to happen as a pro and Kehl is a better athlete.

Browns- Donte Stallworth
Miami police revealed that Donte' Stallworth informed them he did four shots of tequila in the hours before his crash that killed 59-year-old pedestrian Mario Reyes earlier this year.

Stallworth said he met Braylon Edwards and other friends out the night previous, and went home for a "nap" before heading for breakfast at around 7AM the following morning. Stallworth claimed he did not "feel" drunk, but his blood-alcohol level was still .126, or above the 0.08 Florida legal limit.

Bengals- Fui Vakapuna
Bengals signed seventh-round FB Fui Vakapuna to a four-year, $1.811 million contract.

Already 25 after serving a two-year Mormon mission, Vakapuna was mostly a lead blocker at BYU. At 5'11/244, he has the build to play fullback at this level if he improves his technique, but we're guessing he won't make the club.

Seahawks- Owen Schmitt
Seahawks FB Owen Schmitt pleaded not guilty to suspicion of DUI in a Black Diamond (WA) courtroom Tuesday.

This was only an arraignment; a pre-trial hearing is scheduled for later this month. Schmitt could be in danger of NFL discipline if he isn't acquitted.

Packers- T.J. Lang
Packers signed fourth-round OL T.J. Lang to a four-year contract, including a $502,500 signing bonus.

Lang was a tackle throughout his Eastern Michigan days, but the Packers list him as a "guard/tackle." He did practice at right tackle during OTAs and has the athleticism to stay there in Green Bay's hybrid zone-blocking scheme.

Free agent OT Jon Runyan is reportedly on track for a late-July return.

Runyan's agent claims he's been in touch with "several teams." Clubs are likely waiting for the 35-year-old to be ready to pass a physical as he recovers from microfracture surgery. One potential suitor is the Vikings, who could use Runyan as competition for second-round pick Phil Loadholt.

Coordinator Mike Mularkey indicated that Tony Gonzalez will be asked to do more blocking in the Falcons' run-first offense.

"He's a productive blocker and that's important in our offense," the OC said. "As successful as he's been as a receiver, he's a good blocker too." Gonzo was essentially a rocked-up wideout for years in K.C., but Mularkey made it clear that Atlanta's offense will continue to revolve around Michael Turner. Don't expect Gonzalez to repeat his top fantasy TE finish from 2008.

If You Want Favre Vs Packers , You'll Pay For Chiefs Too

"A Brett Favre signing with the Vikings is expected to be announced in time for the start of the team's single-game ticket sales July 20.

The Vikings will play Favre's former team the Green Bay Packers on Monday night, Oct. 5, at the Metrodome on ESPN. The Vikings are planning to require anyone buying a ticket to that game to also buy a ticket to the Aug. 21 exhibition game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Meanwhile, a little birdie heard that Favre and wife Deanna last weekend made a $30,000 deposit on a condominium near 50th and France in Edina.

Redskins- Colt Brennan
Backup Redskins QB Colt Brennan said that he's "going to play a ton" in the preseason as he battles with Todd Collins for the No. 2 job.
That may mean that the Redskins are trying to see if he can step on the field in 2009. After trying to acquire Jay Cutler and Mark Sanchez in the offseason, it's clear starter Jason Campbell is on a short leash. Brennan put up huge numbers at Hawaii but has yet to take an NFL snap.

Bears- Earl Bennett
According to Bears beat writer Brad Biggs, WR Earl Bennett is "being counted on for major production."
At this point the Bears seem comfortable going into the season with Bennett and Devin Hester as their top wideouts. Bennett played with Jay Cutler at Vanderbilt and performed well at spring workouts. Even though Bennett caught zero passes in his rookie season, he's going to have a chance to make a name for himself now.

Thanks in part to his 12 interceptions during OTAs, Bears CB Zackary Bowman has shot up the depth chart.
Bowman seems likely to make the team and will provide depth in case Charles Tillman or Nathan Vasher go down.

Bills- Eric Wood
Rookies Eric Wood and Andy Levitre are projected to be the Bills' starting guards this season.
The Bills offensive line is a mess as they won't have anyone playing the same position they played last year. Langston Walker is moving from right tackle to left tackle, replacing Jason Peters. Wood and Levitre rarely played guard in college. Take this for what it's worth when drafting Buffalo's skill players.

Packers- Nick Barnett
Packers LB Nick Barnett (ACL surgery) says he is 90 percent and expects to be limited at the start of training camp.
Barnett is making a quick recovery from the surgery and seems like he'll be ready for Week 1. Barnett also said that Brett Favre was a "huge distraction" last year and the situation hurt the team.

49ers- Shaun Hill
Beat writer Matt Maiocco doesn't expect the 49ers offense to have any serious issues with the transition from Mike Martz's system to Jimmy Raye's.
Raye, whose "meat and potatoes" system uses digit terminology similar to Martz's complex scheme, has already successfully installed his new offense. Maiocco notes that Shaun Hill and Alex Smith both looked better than he's ever seen them on the practice field.

Raiders- Louis Murphy
Coach Tom Cable singled out fourth-round WR Louis Murphy as the surprise of the Raiders rookie class.
"He has all the makings to be a very special football player at this level," said Cable. "We really think we found one." Don't expect much out of Murphy as a rookie, but the burner has a chance to climb a flimsy Raiders depth chart in the future.

Patriots second-round S Patrick Chung recently announced that he prefers to go by "Pat Chung."
Pat is the son of 1980s reggae singer Sophia George-Chung and half-Jamaican, half-Chinese record producer Ronald Chung. The former Oregon star is expected to be the Patriots' third safety this season.

Brett Favre is reportedly close to purchasing a condominium in the Minneapolis area.
It's not a done deal, but Favre is believed to be "settling" on the condo in Edina. Profootballtalk's latest educated guess has the Favre signing being announced during the week of July 13-17, after the wedding of Brad Childress' daughter and before single-game tickets go on sale July 20.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus writes on his Twitter page that free agent Edgerrin James is "in great playing shape" and "excited about this season."

As NFL news slows to a halt, we always have Rosenhaus to count on for updates. James, who turns 31 in August, is reportedly down to 216 pounds. He's listed at 220. Edge may still have to wait for injuries to strike before finding a team, though with Brian Westbrook ailing Philly wouldn't be a bad fit.

Vikings- Percy Harvin
Former Vikings receiver Cris Carter reportedly unleashed on a player he caught dozing off during Carter's speech at the Rookie Symposium.

Well, we know it wasn't Percy Harvin. Carter, the symposium's final speaker, reportedly told the rookie that, "if you don’t want to listen to people who know more than you and who can help you navigate through what lies ahead, odds are you won’t be in the league for long." It'll be interesting to see if the player is exposed later on. We're betting he will be.

Redskins- Chad Rinehart
Redskins offensive line coach Joe Bugel has noticed a "night and day" change in 2008 third-round pick Chad Rinehart.

Rinehart gave Washington nothing as a rookie, but the team hopes he'll provide depth at guard. The Skins have done poorly developing their offensive line draft picks of late. There was concern last year that Rinehart would bust, but Bugel now says "he's going to be a real good football player for us."

Rams-Alex Barron
Beat writer Bill Coats expects Alex Barron to remain the Rams' starting left tackle when the season opens.

Barron, 27, is in a contract year and could significantly increase his 2010 market value if he performs well on Marc Bulger's blind side. Rookie Jason Smith's superior strength will come in handy at right tackle, although he'll likely move to the left side eventually. It just may not happen this season.

Rams- Adam Carriker
Rams DT Adam Carriker is reportedly fully healthy for the first time since suffering a torn labrum in December of 2007.

Carriker, who showed off his strength and quickness in OTAs, will key Steve Spagnuolo's defensive line along with last year's first-rounder Chris Long. He also has the luxury of sticking to one position this season -- left defensive tackle.

Titans- Jared Cook
Beat writer Jim Wyatt calls Jared Cook the most impressive Titans rookie thus far.

First-rounder Kenny Britt has been slowed by a hamstring injury, so it shouldn't come as any surprise that the third-rounder has stood out the most. A freakish athlete, Cook has combined unique playmaking ability with bad drops this offseason.

Eli Ready To Lead Young Giants 'O'

"It was more a challenge than a reminder when general manager Jerry Reese said this offseason that Eli Manning is "not a veteran any more, he's a Pro Bowler -- we'll put some of this on his back."

With so much talk about the tall and talented receivers the Giants lost, Reese wanted everyone to consider the great asset he believes Manning can and must be.

"We're going to put more of the onus on him," Reese said.

And how did Manning respond?

"I think you got a quarterback going into his sixth year and . . . some young receivers," Manning told The Post yesterday. "It's my job to make sure those guys are on the same page and my job to be a leader and take control of the offense and the passing game.

"As a quarterback you're always going to be a leader, but now I'm one of the older guys on the offense."

Manning was speaking over the phone from Memphis, where he was accompanied by two of his younger teammates, receiver Domenik Hixon and safety Kenny Phillips, to film a Reebok commercial.

Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer are gone, and the replacements as starters are Hixon and Steve Smith, with Sinorice Moss, Mario Manningham and rookies Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden comprising a glaringly unproven receiver corps.

Enter Manning, who says he is embracing Reese's plea to pick up all aspects of his game.

"It doesn't put me in an awkward situation by any means," Manning said. "When you lose some veteran guys, Plaxico and Amani, guys who've been around, now it's a younger receiver corps there's more put on the quarterback. You got to make your players better.""

Harvin sent home ill

"Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin, the 22nd pick in the first round of the April draft, was sent home from the NFL rookie symposium in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., after becoming ill, according to the league's website.

The former University of Florida standout reported for the start of the four-day event Sunday afternoon, but the medical staff suggested he return home after he told them he wasn't feeling well. Harvin and his family live in the Gainesville area.

Organizers of the symposium officially excused Harvin; all 256 draft picks were in attendance on Sunday, according to symposium officials. The website, Pro Football Talk, reported that Harvin might return to the symposium today if he feels better. The symposium features a variety of seminars designed to help rookies adapt to life in the NFL.

Harvin's agent, Joel Segal, did not return a call or text message seeking a comment Monday night."

Vikings- Percy Harvin
Vikings first-round pick Percy Harvin was "sent home and officially excused" from the NFL's Rookie Symposium on Monday.

Harvin exhibited flu-like symptoms and was excused by a doctor. It's his second bizarre health-related issue this offseason. He was hospitalized for dehydration prior to the Vikings' rookie minicamp. A severe cynic would say the Vikes should've seen the writing on the wall when red flags about Harvin's attitude and character surfaced pre-draft, but it's probably nothing.

Broncos- Brandon Marshall
The Broncos reportedly intend to stand firm on their refusal to honor Brandon Marshall's trade demand, unless they're "blown away" with an offer.

Team brass is currently on vacation and "not fretting" about the situation. They can only hope Marshall shows to Dove Valley on time. Since he wants a new contract and doesn't trust team doctors to handle his hip rehab, however, Marshall doesn't seem like a sure thing to be there on the first day of camp.

Cardinals- Darnell Docket
After appearing on NFL Network Monday night, Darnell Dockett posted on his Twitter account that he'd like to be paid like a top-five defensive tackle.

Well, we think it's his Twitter. There have been a lot of phonies going around. Dockett, slated to earn $3.5 million in 2009, was called a top-five tackle by NFL Network's Jamie Dukes and Rod Woodson. It doesn't make Cardinals management any more likely to upgrade his deal that's good through 2011.

49ers- Scott Mckillop
Rookie fifth-rounder Scott McKillop is expected to be the 49ers' future "Ted" linebacker.

The Niners were reportedly just as excited about drafting McKillop as they were with Michael Crabtree. The rookie out of Pittsburgh is expected to play "Robin" to Patrick Willis' "Batman" once Takeo Spikes moves on.

Falcons- Michael Vick

The attorneys for suspended free agent Michael Vick will be in court Tuesday to update a judge on the progress of their client's bankruptcy plan.

Vick's two attempts to present a viable plan to get out of debt were previously rejected. The lawyers won't be formally presenting their new plan yet, but if the judge sounds positive their next attempt could come shortly.

Lions- Cliff Avril
Cliff Avril will reportedly have to beat out Dewayne White to win the Lions' starting right defensive end job.

Starting Avril and White at the same time would give Detroit its most pass rush potential, but the new coaching staff seems satisfied with Jared DeVries at left end. White has the tools to move there full time, but surprisingly didn't practice on the strong side all spring. He and Avril will probably end up rotating on the weak side, which would hurt both of their IDP stats.

Giants- Jay Alford
Justin Tuck predicts that DT Jay Alford will be the Giants' breakout defensive lineman this season.

Alford, who had three sacks on limited snaps in just 10 games last season, will play in sub-packages this year. Tuck indicates Alford will play next to him at tackle in the nickel, but that role is probably Rocky Bernard's. Either way, Alford is another example of New York's league-best depth on the line.

Vikings- Jasper Brinkley
Vikings signed fifth-round LB Jasper Brinkley to a four-year contract.

Brinkley was one of the biggest hitters to come out this year, but he doesn't offer much versatility as a pure inside linebacker without movement skills to play outside. He'll be groomed as an option behind MLB E.J. Henderson.

Browns- Willie McGinest
Free agent OLB Willie McGinest reiterated in an interview with The Sporting News that he wants to play another season.

"I've definitely got that itch. I feel good," McGinest said. "But it has to be the right situation." Now 37, McGinest's body has obviously been breaking down over the last two seasons, and it's surprising he'd indicate he could be picky. McGinest has generated no known interest this offseason.

Gary Kubiak Likes What He Sees

"The five-week period in which Texans coaches can work with players on the practice field ended Wednesday with the last day of minicamp.

Owner Bob McNair, general manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak left the Methodist Training Center knowing they have more talent than at any time in the team's eight-year history.

They also know fans have playoffs-or-bust expectations.

"The playoffs are why I came here," Kubiak said. "It's why I do what I do.

"We have high expectations. We're a better team than any time since I've been here. We're not going to be satisfied with another (8-8 record). I want more, a lot more. The players do, too.

"I'm looking forward to the journey because I like the guys I'm taking it with. We have tremendous character on this team."

When the Texans report for training camp July 30, their goals are to reduce turnovers and improve the red-zone offense and in all areas of defense. They've been 12-4 at home and 4-12 on the road over the last two years.

"The biggest progress we made last year was on offense (third in yards, 17th in scoring), but we still need to get better," Kubiak said. "This season, we have to get our defense caught up with our offense."

The Texans will have at least two new starters on defense in left end Antonio Smith and strong-side linebacker Brian Cushing, their first-round draft choice out of USC.

Cushing to start

"Rookies have to be big contributors to our team, but I don't imagine you're going to see three or four of them starting because we're a better team," Kubiak said. "Cushing has been a starter since the day he stepped off the bus. We're very happy with him.

"The (offseason program) went very well. The team's attitude is very positive. The young guys got more work than they ever have, and they made a lot of progress.

"The players worked real hard in the weight room. The leaders have taken charge. We have some great competition. I have to make sure, as a coach, that we get the reps evened out because we're going to have some tough decisions to make.""

Yahoo Sports reports that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is "leaning toward" indefinitely suspending free agent Plaxico Burress.

Yahoo's Jason Cole also says it looks like free agent Michael Vick's indefinite suspension will be continued. A similar stance to the one Goodell took with Donte' Stallworth is expected in both cases. Cole says there's a "reasonable" chance that Vick won't play at all in 2009, and that Plax's suspension could be levied even before his legal issues play out. Burress wouldn't be worth a flier pick in fantasy leagues if he receives an indefinite ban.

Chiefs- Tank Tyler
Tank Tyler is projected to start at nose tackle in the Chiefs' new 3-4 defense.

At 6'2/306, he's small for the position. It's hard to imagine Tyler commanding any double teams, or the Chiefs' run defense being remotely stout in 2009.

Raiders- Darrius Heyward-Bey
Raiders first-round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey says his balky hamstring is still only at "80 percent."

The injury cost him nearly all of OTA season. Heyward-Bey predicts he'll be ready for the start of training camp in a month, but he's going to be behind Chaz Schilens and Johnnie Lee Higgins in their competition to start.

Jaguars- Zach Miller
Jaguars signed sixth-round TE Zach Miller to a four-year contract.

Miller impressed onlookers during minicamp season, but he's still a pretty long shot as an undersized (6'4/233) converted quarterback coming from Nebraska-Omaha. The Jags will try to mold Miller into a pass-catching backup for Marcedes Lewis, who's never taken the next step as a receiver.

Giants- Tarvis Beckum
Giants signed third-round TE Travis Beckum to a four-year contract.

A Kellen Winslow clone, Beckum exhibited dominant pass-catching skills in Wisconsin's pro-style offense before a fractured fibula cut his career short. We would've been higher on Beckum for this year had he not missed most of spring practice with a balky hamstring. His role is currently uncertain.

Chiefs- Tyler Thigpen
Tyler Thigpen now says he's satisfied with being the Chiefs' backup quarterback behind Matt Cassel.

Thigpen was the fantasy QB2 overall behind only Drew Brees from Week 8 on last season, but he realizes that Cassel is the Chiefs' guy now. "They've got a lot of money invested in (Cassel)," Thigpen said. "I'm going to support him and do anything that I can to make him better. I'm a team player." Thigpen will be an immediate waiver wire pickup if Cassel goes down.

Steelers- William Gay
According to The Football Scientist K.C. Joyner, William Gay of the Steelers gave up the fewest yards-per-attempt of any CB in the league last year.

Gay's 3.4 YPA was one of the primary reasons Pittsburgh was comfortable letting free agent Bryant McFadden walk. Gay will be the team's starting left corner this year. He'll likely still be tested often playing opposite Ike Taylor.

Lions- Bryant Johnson
Even though the Lions traded for WR Dennis Northcutt, Bryant Johnson is expected to remain the No. 2 wideout.

Johnson has never lived up to his first-round pick status, failing to crack 800 receiving yards in any of his six seasons. It's clear the Lions need to upgrade the spot opposite Calvin Johnson, but it doesn't look like Northcutt, Ronald Curry, or Derrick Williams will take that job away from Bryant Johnson.

Giants- Bears, Jets all but rule out Plaxico Burress
The Bears have "pretty much ruled out" free agent Plaxico Burress, reports ESPN.com's John Clayton.

Clayton added that the Jets are "almost in that same boat," and the Bucs GM expressed a similar sentiment over the weekend. No team is expected to sign Plax before the beginning of training camp. Potentially interested teams are in a holding pattern until commissioner Roger Goodell hands down his ruling on a suspension.

Jaguars- Trade Dennis Northcutt for Gerald Alexander
Jaguars agreed to trade WR Dennis Northcutt to the Lions in exchange for S Gerald Alexander. The deal is contingent on both players passing physicals and will not be official until Monday.

While the trade shows the Jags' high regard for their three late-round receivers, it also may signal a lack of faith in Lions third-round pick Derrick Williams, who recently came down with a hamstring injury. Northcutt is a candidate to return punts for the Lions and will likely battle Williams and Ronald Curry for slot receiver duties. Jags GM Gene Smith did well to get a young safety for Northcutt, who is grossly overpaid and turning 32. It's a shock that anybody wanted him for more than the minimum salary, but these are the Lions.

Falcons- Michael Vick
Suspended free agent Michael Vick is in danger of missing the entire 2009 season, according to Yahoo Sports' Jason Cole.

"(Vick) is not just walking out one day and playing again," a source close to Vick said. "Yeah, he served his time, but he has to prove himself. When the commissioner talks about wanting to see remorse, he’s not kidding." Vick is currently on indefinite suspension. He has yet to present a bankruptcy plan in federal court that any judge has deemed doable.

Bills- Shawn Nelson
Rookie Shawn Nelson is not likely to claim the Bills' starting tight end job, according to the team's official website.

Nelson is practicing as a wide receiver and probably won't see much action on early downs in his first season. He could lead all Bills tight ends in receptions, but won't approach TE1 value as a mere third-down option.

Eagles- LeSean McCoy
Eagles agreed to terms with RB LeSean McCoy, the No. 53 overall pick, on a four-year contract.

The first second-rounder to sign, McCoy will get a deal just north of last year's 53rd pick, Limas Sweed ($3.27M/4 years). McCoy has work to do with his blitz protections and inside running, but he's a ready-made receiving back with extremely quick feet and nifty open-field moves. Brian Westbrook's re-draft owners will want to reach into the middle rounds for McCoy as Philadelphia's starter recovers from more knee surgery and an ankle procedure.

New Ravens cornerback Foxworth wise beyond his years

"His parents, his girlfriend and his teammates all say the same thing about Domonique Foxworth. The Ravens cornerback might look like a 26-year-old, he might run like a 26-year-old, but he thinks and conducts his life like a 40-year-old - always has. His parents considered him more responsible than his brother, who is two years older. His NFL mentor, Champ Bailey, considered him the levelheaded one in their relationship. Whether the subject is President Barack Obama, the role of a black athlete in modern society or the NFL players union's treatment of retired players, Foxworth can deliver a well-crafted opinion.

His ability to react, not with emotion but with a cool assessment of facts and priorities, has carried him through a complicated early career. On the verge of reporting to his first Ravens training camp next month, Foxworth already has endured the violent death of a beloved teammate, frustrating stints on the bench, an abrupt trade and free agency.

In the face of such obstacles, he helped establish a teen center in his murdered friend's name, became the youngest member of the NFL players union's executive committee and earned a $28 million deal with his hometown team.

It would be shortsighted to say he's worldly and thoughtful compared with other football players. Foxworth is worldly and thoughtful compared with most people.

"He's very methodical about everything he does," says Foxworth's father, Lorinzo. "When things come up, you're not going to get an off-the-wall reaction from him. There's going to be a thought-out process that goes into it."

Foxworth's mother, Karen, laughs at her husband's words. "That is directly descended from his father," she says. "They're both old men in young men's bodies."

Lorinzo Foxworth was in the midst of a 20-year Army career when Domonique was born in Oxford, England, in 1983. The family moved to the Baltimore area as he reached kindergarten age and settled in Randallstown. Domonique and his elder brother, Dion, built their existence around sports."

Rod Woodson's Road To Canton

"On occasion, a player comes along who does not belong in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a player so dominant in his sport that he deserves a higher honor.

A player such as Rod Woodson.

Who says? How about these guys:

"Without a doubt,'' Bill Cowher said, "he'll go down as one of the greatest players to ever play the game.''

"If you tell me Rod Woodson is your top defensive back of all time," said Dick LeBeau, "you will get no argument from me because he certainly merits that."

"He was a player you get once in a long time," said Dan Rooney.

"He, in my opinion, might be the greatest athlete that Chuck Noll ever drafted," said Mel Blount. "And that's saying a lot when you think of all the Hall of Famers. This guy was special."

"He was one of those rare top draft picks who probably even exceeded what people thought he would be," said Tom Donahoe.

And, from Tony Dungy on coaching Woodson his first two seasons with the Steelers: "You could see the specialness. We felt he'd be a multi-year Pro Bowler. You could see that from the first day."
