Lighter, Faster Beanie Hurt At Camp

"Ken Whisenhunt wasn't crazy about Beanie Wells' decision to arrive at training camp at about 3 a.m. Saturday, but he sure liked the way the rookie running back looked when he got there.

Wells, who signed a five-year contract Friday night, checked in at 224 pounds, 22 fewer than he weighed when the Cardinals drafted him with the 31st pick in April. It was 14 pounds lighter than he played last year as a junior at Ohio State.

"I definitely want to stay at this weight," Wells said. "I feel a lot faster and quicker. And I don't get tired as much."

But the lighter weight doesn't guarantee against injury, as Wells found out in his first practice. He suffered a left ankle injury during a simple run drill about halfway through practice and left the field on a cart with about 15 minutes remaining. Wells was able to walk after the injury and was to undergo X-rays Saturday night.

Whisenhunt was not available for comment after practice and an update on Wells condition was not available.

Wells lost weight at the Cardinals suggestion, agreeing that less of him might result in more playing time. He blamed his weight gain on a predraft travel schedule that had him meeting, and eating, with several NFL teams.

Now the only thing hefty about Wells is his wallet. Wells' contract is worth $11.8 million, including $6.3 million guaranteed, and one of Wells' agents, Adam Heller, said the fifth year of the contract is a team option.

The player taken behind Wells, Steelers defensive tackle Evander Hood, recently signed a five-year deal worth $11.1 million, including $6.1 million guaranteed.

Wells spent the past few days in Phoenix, nervously awaiting the completion of the deal, which reportedly had been close for a few days. Wells was driven to Flagstaff in the wee hours Saturday, although Whisenhunt tried to talk him into coming later in the morning.

Wells insisted on leaving right away, however, passed a conditioning test a few hours later and participated in his first practice that afternoon.

He ended up missing just two practices.

Vonnie Holliday
The Dolphins reportedly haven't ruled out re-signing free agent Vonnie Holliday, despite releasing him in March.

Holliday drew some interest from Denver and Detroit immediately after he was cut, but it's been quiet since. Holliday, 33, would obviously be a short-term solution for anyone, but he's coming off a very productive season.

Cadillac Williams
Cadillac Williams' recovery from a torn patellar tendon is reportedly ahead of schedule.

We're still not sure he's going to be on the Week 1 roster. The Bucs have three backs ahead of Williams (Derrick Ward, Earnest Graham, Clifton Smith) they consider capable of contributing in a variety of ways, and we doubt they would've paid Ward substantial money if there were plans to rely on Cadillac.

Yamon Figurs
The Baltimore Sun suggests that third-year return man Yamon Figurs could be on the roster bubble in Ravens camp.

The Ravens made Figurs the 74th overall pick after he ran the fastest forty time at the 2007 Combine, but he adds little on offense and is in danger of losing his return duties. If Baltimore doesn't want him, perhaps Al Davis will.

Derrick Burgess
Beat writer Jerry McDonald indicates in his blog that the Raiders are serious about not starting DE Derrick Burgess this year.

McDonald expects Burgess, who barely practices anyway due to constant nagging injuries, to only see about "12-15 snaps" a game behind Greg Ellis and whoever wins Oakland's other starting defensive end job. This is going to hurt Burgess' IDP value immensely. His tackle numbers will be way down.

Alphonso Smith
Broncos agreed to terms with rookie CB Alphonso Smith, the No. 37 overall pick, on a four-year contract.

Mike Nolan's staff envisions Smith as a playmaking nickel back behind aging Champ Bailey and Andre' Goodman, with the potential to eventually take over one of the starting positions. Smith is small (5'9") and has below average speed, however. Covering the slot may prove his niche long term.

Jeff George
Free agent Jeff George reiterated that he still wants back in the NFL.

"I feel like I can still play, and if there's someone out there to give me a shot, that would be wonderful," he said. "Age is only a number. It's about how you feel and how you feel when you keep throwing." George has gotten next to no interest because he's 41 and wasn't even very good when he was young.

Hollis Thomas
Free agent DT Hollis Thomas is reportedly considering signing with four teams, and plans to make a decision this week.

We know the Eagles are one. Other suitors could be the Lions, Falcons, Rams, and Vikings (who may be without starting DTs Pat and Kevin Williams for the first four games). Thomas, 35, can add depth at the nose tackle spot.

Michael Crabtree
According to beat writer Matt Maiocco, "there are indications that it will be a challenge for the 49ers to get (Michael Crabtree) signed before the start of training camp."

The sides are still far apart in contract negotiations and Crabtree's agent, Eugene Parker, is known for holdouts. Crabtree wants to be paid like a top-five player because that's where he "should have" gone. Crabtree is already far behind the 49ers' other receivers as he missed the entire offseason program (foot). This could be more trouble.

Mike Thomas
Jaguars rookie WR Mike Thomas has reportedly been "penciled in" for the slot receiver job.

The fourth-round pick got his chance when Dennis Northcutt was traded to the Lions. Thomas is tiny but will catch some quick-hitters from David Garrard and impressed with his speed in the spring. He won't be much of a fantasy factor unless something happens to Torry Holt or Mike Walker.

James Hardy
Bills placed WRs James Hardy and C.J. Hawthorne on active/PUP.

Hardy, last year's second-round pick, is recovering from January ACL surgery. Hawthorne had an undisclosed surgery on his leg during June minicamp action. Both players can re-join the active roster as soon as they pass a physical. Considering the Bills depth at wide receiver, we still expect Hardy to open the season on the PUP list.

Vaughn Martin
Chargers signed fourth-round DE Vaughn Martin to a four-year contract.

Martin, out of the University of Western Ontario, was the first Canadian collegiate underclassman ever to declare himself eligible for the draft. Born in Jamaica, Martin didn't take up football until 10th grade. He's an interesting developmental project.

Josh Cribbs will reportedly be in attendance for the start of Browns training camp Friday.

There have been conflicting reports about whether or not Cribbs would hold out, but he couldn't even bring himself to stay away from minicamp. Even if he does report on time, this situation has the potential to turn ugly if the Browns don't tear up his old contract.

Everette Brown
Panthers signed second-round DE Everette Brown to a four-year, $4.3 million contract, according to Scout.com. The deal includes $2.7 million in guarantees.

The Panthers gave up their 2010 first-round pick to select the ACC sack leader. Brown will play a situational passing-rush role this season, and he's insurance in case the team can't re-sign Julius Peppers next offseason.

Evander Hood
Steelers agreed to terms with first-round DT Evander "Ziggy" Hood on a five-year, $11.3 million contract. The deal comes with $6.1 million in guarantees and a base package of $8.7 million.

The Steelers now have all of their rookies locked up. The defending champs can afford to take it slowly with Hood since they have Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel as returning starters. Keisel is a free agent after the season, so Hood could step in next year.

The Bucs' starting quarterback job is "Luke McCown's to lose," according to ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas.

Most reports indicate a two-horse race with McCown and Byron Leftwich. If this report is true, Leftwich will have to leave no doubt in preseason action that he's the better quarterback.

Drew Bennett
Ravens agreed to terms with WR Drew Bennett on a one-year contract for the veteran minimum.

Bennett stood out among D.J. Hackett, Chris Hannon and Justin Brown during Friday morning's workout. The Ravens didn't hear the answer they wanted from Derrick Mason, so they're forced to cover themselves with a veteran receiver. Right now, Bennett is likely second behind Mark Clayton for fantasy potential among Baltimore receivers. That would obviously change if Mason reconsiders his retirement.

Harry Douglas
ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas believes Harry Douglas will push Michael Jenkins for a starting job.

We're skeptical on this one. Jenkins is one of the best blocking receivers in the league, which comes in handy in a run-heavy offense. He's also coming off a career year and a contract extension. Douglas was fantastic in OTAs, but he's likely ticketed for slot duties again.

Dexter Jackson
Last year's second-round WR/KR Dexter Jackson will need to have a "heck of a training camp" to even make the Bucs roster, according to ESPN.som's Pat Yasinskas. Jackson failed to record a catch last season, and his calling card -- kick returning -- has fallen into the hands of Clifton Smith. Even if he manages to stay on the roster, he'd likely be inactive on game days.

DeAngelo Smith
Cowboys agreed to terms with fifth-round S DeAngelo Smith on a four-year contract.

Smith was strictly a cornerback at Cincinnati, but the Cowboys envision both him and Alan Ball as a versatile enough to also handle safety. An option to return punts, he'll concentrate mostly on special teams as a rookie.

Deon Butler
Seahawks signed third-round WR Deon Butler to a four-year contract.

Butler stood out as the team's most impressive rookie in May minicamp action, and his 4.3 speed adds much-needed homerun hitting ability to the receiving corps. Due to backup at split end this season, he could spell the end of Deion Branch if he continues to impress.

Chargers released ILB Matt Wilhelm.

The Chargers have been unhappy with Wilhelm's work against the run, and he was benched for Tim Dobbins and Carlos Polk while dealing with a calf injury at mid-season last year. Dobbins will be the favorite to step in opposite Stephen Cooper, with Kevin Burnett likely handling nickel duties. The Patriots, hurting for depth inside, may be interested in Wilhelm

NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on his Twitter account that what he's hearing about Ben Roethlisberger's sexual assault allegations "look very good" for the quarterback.

"Let's just say that sometimes there are things you hear and know, and the things I'm hearing and knowing look very good for Ben," wrote Schefter. Our favorite league insider added that ESPN's handling of the Big Ben story "will be proven 100% correct."

James Casey
Texans agreed to terms with fifth-round TE James Casey on a four-year contract.

The Texans have talked about using Casey at several positions, but he's likely to be limited to special teams as a rookie. He's fourth on the depth chart at tight end and will need to work on his blocking to move up. Ultra-productive at Rice, Casey could be Owen Daniels' successor if contract problems can't be ironed out with the Pro Bowler.

49ers signed fifth-round QB Nate Davis to a four-year contract, including a $150,300 signing bonus.

Davis, a developmental project for the Niners, is going to have to make an impression this summer if the Niners are going to carry him over third quarterback Damon Huard. The practice squad is a more likely scenario.

Vonta Leach
Texans FB Vonta Leach was arrested earlier this week in Lumberton, North Carolina and charged with a misdemeanor simple assault.

He allegedly hit another man in the face with a beer bottle and kicked him during a fight. Leach claims, however, that he was accosted and simply defended himself. He was jailed in Robeson County and released on a "written promise." His court date is scheduled for August 18.

Knowshon Moreno
ESPN.com's Bill Williamson expects Knowshon Moreno to not only start but also to be the "focal point" of the Broncos offense this season.

This gibes with beat writer Mike Klis' pronouncement that the starting job is Moreno's, period. Running backs often make immediate impacts, and the Broncos expect one from the No. 12 overall pick. Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson predicts 1,500 combined yards for Moreno this season, which matches up well with Football Outsiders' projections.

Michael Vick
Michael Vick could be suspended four games after being conditionally reinstated next week, according to ESPN.com's Sal Paolantonio and Chris Mortensen.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello is denying that a decision has been made. If the ESPN story is correct, Vick is now free to sign with any team that will have him -- and participate in training camp -- but he would then be unavailable until Week 5. Though it's not Vick's best-case scenario, it's still good news for the former felon who could have been facing a full-season suspension.

Chris Wells
The Arizona Republic's Kent Somers agrees with beat writer Darren Urban's prediction that Tim Hightower will open the season as the Cardinals' starting running back.

Hightower will definitely enter training camp as the starter, but Wells will force the coaches to make a tough decision if he shows blitz pickup skills and big-play ability in preseason action. Considering the talent differential, Wells will push Hightower into a situational role sooner rather than later.

Joseph Addai
According to the Indianapolis Star, the Colts are "not totally satisfied with what they're getting out of Joseph Addai."

The "football scientist" K.C. Joyner recently pointed out that Addai did well when his linemen blocked poorly, but he couldn't break big plays when he had clear lanes. That doesn't bode well for future fantasy success. His YPC has dropped steadily from 4.8 as a rookie to 3.5 last year, and his contract is up after 2010.

The first round will start on Thursday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The second and third rounds will resume on Friday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m., with Rounds 4-7 picking up at 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

Antoine Winfield
Vikings signed CB Antoine Winfield to a new five-year, $36 million contract. The deal includes $16.1 million in guarantees.

Winfield, 32, is no sure bet to play out this deal, but he's coming off a long deserved Pro Bowl berth and is easily the Vikes' top corner. They had to pay the man. Winfield is such a good tackler that he could move to safety later in his career if Cedric Griffin and Asher Allen develop as hoped. This year, Winfield will continue to shadow opposing top wideouts. Opponents may begin throwing away from him with Griffin a bigger liability on the other side.

Brett Favre
ESPN's Ed Werder reports that free agent Brett Favre is now "conflicted" about whether he truly wants to return to the NFL.

Werder says Favre got calls from Jared Allen, Steve Hutchinson, and Adrian Peterson saying they're sure they'd make the Super Bowl with him at QB. If not for the players' efforts, Favre "might have already decided against playing." Money is reportedly no issue, as the sides have a one-year, $10 million agreement in place, but Favre remains uncertain he can make it through a full season. He's never missed a game in his life to this point.

Chargers- Clinton Hart
Chargers SS Clinton Hart blames his struggles in 2008 on playing hurt.

Hart did break a bone in his hand in September and seemed to never get over a Week 13 stinger, but blaming bad years on injury sure is common among San Diego defensive backs. After being relentlessly burnt by tight ends in 2008, Hart will have to hold off rookie Kevin Ellison to keep his job.

Falcons- Michael Vick
ESPN's Michael Smith reports that free agent Michael Vick's expected "conditional" return to the league would likely entail close monitoring by the NFL and a regimented program before any thoughts of full reinstatement.

The program could reportedly include regular drug testing and psychological evaluations, among other things. ESPN's Sal Paolantonio says Vick's camp is currently huddling to determine his approach for an upcoming meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell. Tony Dungy may be a part of that group.

Patriots- Jarvis Green
Patriots contract-year DE Jarvis Green attempted Wednesday to clarify a statement he made to a Louisiana newspaper, which he told he'd "love to come home and finish off as a Saint."

He was also quoted as saying, "this is my last year with the Patriots." "I don't think I said it like that," Green said Wednesday. "Me being from Louisiana and playing at LSU and...you say it would be a dream to play for the Saints. But I'd love to stay a Patriot." Green is due $2.9 million this season.

Seahawks- Owen Schmitt
Seahawks FB Owen Schmitt pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving in connection with his June arrest for suspicion of DUI.

Schmitt got a 365-day sentence, but 364 were suspended and he already spent one day in jail. Schmitt also must pay $2,130 in fines. We're guessing he won't be suspended as a first-time offender of the NFL conduct policy.

Vikings- Antoine Winfield
The agent for Vikings CB Antoine Winfield is en route to Minnesota to "apparently" close a new contract for his client.

Agent Ashanti Webb texted the St. Paul Pioneer Press Wednesday that he's "on (his) way to the Twin Cities now." Winfield, entering a contract year, has been asking for a new deal all offseason. He gained some leverage when the Vikes extended fellow CB Cedric Griffin, who is a much weaker player.

Falcons- Joe Horn
Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome has reportedly been in contact with former Saints and Falcons receiver Joe Horn.

Horn, 37, has been dying to get back in the NFL since Atlanta cut him in August of 2008. He's received very little interest, but Newsome reportedly plans to contact him after the Ravens try out Drew Bennett and D.J. Hackett, among others, on Friday. That Horn wasn't invited to the tryout is telling.

Raiders- Zach Miller
The Raiders anticipate Zach Miller getting more pass-catching opportunities with rookie Brandon Myers taking over the blocking tight end role.

Myers is viewed as a "block-and-release player" in two-tight end sets. Miller could line up in the slot more and be a matchup weapon versus safeties and linebackers. He's bound to improve on his 2008 numbers (56/778/1).

Mark Anthony Becomes Minority Owner Of Dolphins

Mark Anthony has bought a stake in American football team the Miami Dolphins. He has become a minority owner of the National Football League (NFL) club, which was almost entirely bought out by New York entrepreneur Stephen Ross in January for $1 billion. Speaking at the announcement of his investment Marc (40) joked: “It would have probably been cheaper just to buy season tickets!” He added: “I'm a huge sports fan. These opportunities don't come around too often. It's quite an honour and a privilege to be able to sit here today saying that I'm a part-owner of an NFL team.”

Chad Ochocinco says actor Denzel Washington contacted him to "make sure my mind was clear" before the Bengals' June 22 minicamp.

Ocho's known for stretching the truth, but seems serious about this one. "He was in Europe, filming a movie, yet he took the time to reach out," Chad said. "He is the coolest individual I’ve ever met." Ochocinco wants to repay Denzel with a "record-breaking year" and swears he's "ready to rock and roll."

Steelers- Ben Roethlisberger
Ben Roethlisberger has canceled a Thursday press conference to promote his reality TV show with Shaquille O'Neal.

It undoubtedly could've gotten ugly in light of Andrea McNulty's accusations against Big Ben. The taping of "Shaq Vs." is scheduled to begin August 18.

Eagles- Brian Westbrook
Brian Westbrook is reportedly in danger of losing his goal-line carries.

The Eagles' other options are Kyle Eckel, rookie LeSean McCoy, and new FB Leonard Weaver. FOXSports reports the "word is" Westbrook (knee, ankle) will resume running by September, but he carries an awful lot of fantasy risk.

Bears- Greg Olsen
FOXSports' John Czarnecki predicts that Greg Olsen will "double his receiving production from 2008" this season.

We share the Czar's belief that Olsen could lead Chicago in receiving, but fully doubling his numbers would give him an unrealistic 108/1148/10 line. We envision Olsen approaching 70 catches and 800 yards, with six scores.

Panthers- Chris Gamble
The Panthers reportedly plan to isolate CB Chris Gamble on opposing No. 1 receivers this season.

Carolina may have learned its lesson after Larry Fitzgerald torched (mostly) Ken Lucas for 166 yards on eight grabs in last year's playoffs. Gamble is usually the club's left corner. He'll be bookended by Richard Marshall in 2009.

Jets, Giants Have 'No Intrest' In Vick

" If Michael Vick manages to get reinstated into the NFL, don't expect to see him playing for either local team.

Both John Mara and Woody Johnson shot down any possibility the former Falcons quarterback, whose 23-month sentence for his role in a dogfighting ring ended yesterday, would suit up for either team.

"No," Giants owner Mara said with a laugh. "On a lot of levels, no."

Johnson was also adamant about Vick not becoming a Jet. "There's no interest," said Johnson.

The Jets have had plenty of issues at quarterback in recent years and drafted USC's Mark Sanchez with the fifth pick in this year's draft. He will battle with Kellen Clemens for the starting spot.

"We've got Kellen Clemens and now we have young Mark Sanchez, so I think we're good on quarterbacks," said Johnson, adding that even if they weren't set, he likely still wouldn't be interested. "I don't think we'd go in that direction."

The owners were outside their new stadium for the first ride on the train that will run to the Meadowlands for games starting this season.

And while it's clear Damien Woody and Jerricho Cotchery won't play with Vick, both Jets said he should be allowed to suit up somewhere.

"I feel like he's done his time and there's a time to let them move forward with their life," said Woody, who also understood why a team would decline to bring him in. "There's a lot to go in to bringing [him] aboard, especially in tough economic times. You've got sponsors and you always have to take those things into consideration."

"I hope he takes advantage of it if he's able to get a second chance," Cotchery said. "It's gonna take awhile to rebuild his image . . . but he's a talented player. Someone will give him a shot.""

Roethlisberger denies allegations of sexual assault

In a complaint that reads like the rape allegations made several years ago against NBA star Kobe Bryant, Harrah's employee Andrea McNulty alleges sexual assault against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in a lawsuit filed last week in Washoe County, Nevada.

But lawyer David Cornwell strongly denied the allegations Monday night, in a statement released to PFT. "Ben has never sexually assaulted anyone; especially Andrea McNulty," Cornwell said.

In the civil suit, which Cornwell confirms was served on Roethlisberger over the weekend and a copy of which our own Gregg Rosenthal has obtained, McNulty alleges that Roethlisberger asked her to come to his hotel room to fix the television, and that he thereafter forced her to have sex with him.

Roethlisberger faces one civil count of assault, one civil count of sexual assault and battery, one civil count of false imprisonment, one civil count of false pretenses, one civil count of fraud, and one civil count of intentonal infliction of emtional distress.

McNulty also claims that the coworkers named in the complaint thereafter defamed her by making allegedly false and inflammatory statements, and by allegedly serving as aiders and abettors of Roethlisberger's alleged misconduct after the fact.

Cornwell, a finalist for the position of NFLPA Executive Director who has represented in the recent past Saints running back Reggie Bush and Browns receiver Donte' Stallworth, points to the fact that no criminal complaint has been filed, and that no criminal investigation has occurred.

"The timing of the lawsuit and the absence of a criminal complaint and a criminal investigation are the most compelling evidence of the absence of any criminal conduct," Cornwell said. "If an investigation is commenced, Ben will cooperate fully and Ben will be fully exonerated."

It's unknown at this point whether McNulty ever has attempted to file criminal charges as a result of the incident, which allegedly occurred in July 2008.

"Ben will not be baited into a public discussion about his personal life, but we will defend
him vigorously," Cornwell said. "The limited value that Ms. McNulty derived from public disclosure of these viciously false allegations is the only value she will ever receive from Ben in this case."

Regardless of how this one turns out, it has the potential to serve as a significant distraction for Roethlisberger as the 2009 season approaches, especially if the lawsuit triggers a criminal probe.

Is Cassel the one player the Chiefs have sought all these years?

"How important are franchise quarterbacks? You aren't successful without one!" Dick Vermeil says. "You get by, but you don't get better. You don't win big."

Former Chiefs center Tim Grunhard agrees: "That's what young people are looking for. They want a hero, a hero they can believe in, a guy they can go in the backyard and when they play football say, 'I'm Matt Cassel.' We've been told time and time again that these guys were going to come in, be the guy, be the face, be the resurrection of the Kansas City Chiefs. And it's never worked. Never."

Dawson was the last player to have come in, been the man, resurrected the franchise and brought home the trophy. Joe Montana was very good at the end of his career, and Trent Green put in five very fine - at times fantastic - full seasons. But Montana could only take the Chiefs to the AFC championship game, and Green led his team to only two winning seasons.

But those names don't matter anymore. One does: Matt Cassel, he of one good season in New England, a college career without a single start and a contract reportedly worth $63 million, designating him the guy who must lead this town's football team until at least 2014.

"He hit the mother lode, huh?" Dawson says with a raised eyebrow and quick smirk.

The old legend nods his head and lets his blue eyes go back in time to when he - like Cassel - hovered between obscurity and greatness. The smirk fades. Something closer to a man knowing how much luck plays a part in life emerges in its place.

"You've got to earn some respect," he says. "You've got to have some talent around you. You have to have some ability. You've got to have the chance to play."

Dawson wants to say how his story offers hope that Matt Cassel can be the real deal, but first we must acknowledge that the Chiefs' history since Dawson requires - to say the least - some cautious optimism.

DAILY NFL PLAYER UPDATE #15 07/20/2009

Falcons- Matt Ryan
Matt Ryan "must have lived in the weight room all offseason," notes NFL.com's Pat Kirwan.

Ryan smartly pointed out that the strength Tom Brady added early in his career helped to make him one of the best in the game. Ryan is on the Brady/Peyton Manning career path as a cerebral quarterback who can make all the throws and has already demonstrated a fourth-quarter presence.

Bengals- Carson Palmer
Carson Palmer continues to show excitement over Chris Henry, telling NFL.com's Pat Kirwan that the receiver could be "on the verge of a Randy Moss-type career."

Henry has reportedly reformed his wayward ways and worked closely with Palmer for much of the offseason. We've often considered him a poor man's Randy Moss, but he's going to need a Laveranues Coles or Chad Ochocinco injury to accrue major fantasy value in 2009. He's certainly worth a Dynasty-league stash in the meantime.

Steelers- Willie parker
Willie Parker has reportedly been "attacking his offseason training regimen like he never has before."

"I'm getting that speed back like I had two or three years ago," Parker said recently. "I'm faster than I've been." Parker still isn't a great bet to stay healthy through 16 games, but a contract push will provide plenty of motivation in his effort to hold off Rashard Mendenhall.

Falcons- Michael Vick
Sources tell ESPN.com's John Clayton that Michael Vick doesn't want to play in Canada and "hasn't entertained any thoughts" of joining the UFL.

Vick is concentrating on an NFL return, and Clayton reports that commissioner Roger Goodell has received positive reports "from people he trusts." ESPN's Chris Mortensen predicts that Vick will formally request reinstatement within the next 24 to 48 hours.

Browns- Josh Cribbs
Josh Cribbs told a Cleveland radio station that he'll be there when Browns veterans report to training camp on July 31.

This differs from previous reports which said Cribbs had no plans to play under his current contract. Maybe this is Cribbs simply expressing optimism that his agent will work out a deal with the Browns when they meet this week.

Jets- Brett Favre
NFL.com is reporting that people close to Brett Favre expect him to decide on his playing status by Friday.

Favre's personal deadline is July 30, but it doesn't look like he'll wait that long to make an announcement. Virtually everyone assumes he will suit up for the Vikings this season. Favre must be convinced his surgically repaired arm is good to go - or maybe he just wants more attention.

Panthers- Ryne Robinson
Ryne Robinson is still the leading candidate to return punts and kicks for the Panthers this season.

Rookies Sherrod Martin, Captain Munnerlyn and Larry Beavers could battle for the job during training camp, but it's probably Robinson's to lose. He handled the duties for the Panthers in 2007 before hurting his knee last summer.

Dolphins- Ronnie Brown
The player rep for Ronnie Brown says the Dolphins have approached him about an extension for the potential 2010 free agent.

The sides have had preliminary discussions which are expected to intensify during training camp. That the Dolphins are pursuing an extension shows they believe Brown is back to his pre-injury form. Raiders- Nnamdi Asomugha
Nnamdi Asomugha says the Raiders might let him shadow opposing No. 1 receivers under new coordinator John Marshall.

All last year the Raiders left Asomugha at right corner and gave whoever was at LCB (usually DeAngelo Hall or Chris Johnson) safety help over the top. Now that Asomugha is the league's richest defensive back, perhaps he'll be given more shadow coverage responsibilities. That could be bad news for intradivision rivals Dwayne Bowe, Vincent Jackson, and Brandon Marshall.

Coordinator Bevell Visits Favre With Trainer

"Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell visited Brett Favre in Hattiesburg, Miss., last week to watch him throw passes, but it still remains uncertain when the currently retired quarterback will make a decision on playing in Minnesota this season, according to an ESPN.com report Sunday night.

The Star Tribune reported last week that Vikings athletic trainer Eric Sugarman had made a second trip to check on Favre's progress from arthroscopic surgery on his throwing arm, but Bevell's presence wasn't known until Sunday evening. The Star Tribune confirmed Bevell also was on the trip.

That would make Bevell the first member of coach Brad Childress' staff to visit Favre in Mississippi. Bevell watched Favre perform in a rigorous throwing session that included an estimated 100 passes, sources told ESPN.

Favre, according to those sources, felt his performance with the Oak Grove High School team was encouraging. Favre, however, also "warned the Vikings representatives that he might be forced to delay a decision on whether to play until just before the team opens training camp.""

Cutler Remembers Mentor Steve McNair

"Bears quarterback Jay Cutler remembers the helping hand he received from Steve McNair and is mourning the loss of the former Tennessee Titans quarterback.

In a story by Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean, Cutler said he needed a good showing in the Senior Bowl to boost his stock before the 2006 NFL draft. Because the offense Cutler's team would be running was being directed by the Titans' coaching staff, McNair volunteered to tutor the former Vanderbilt star beforehand.

''Mac met with me on two occasions, and he would have stayed there with me all day, as long as it took for me to learn the offense,'' Cutler told the newspaper. ''I'll never forget that, and that just shows you the type of guy he was. That was going to be a big step for me to go there and play well. Ever since then, I have thought of him as a friend.''

Cutler said he was stunned when he learned of McNair's murder last weekend from his agent, Bus Cook, who also represented McNair.

''I just saw Mac two weeks ago, and I was talking to him about his days at Alcorn State and how much fun he was to watch back then,'' Cutler told the Tennessean. ''We talked about a lot of things. He was telling me about his sons and going on and on about how well they were doing. We talked for an hour about his oldest son and what a good football player he was."

Vikings Send Trainer To Check Favre Again

"Vikings trainer Eric Sugarman was in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Wednesday to check on the physical condition of quarterback Brett Favre, another indication the veteran NFL quarterback is headed for the Vikings.

This is Sugarman's second visit to Favre in Mississippi. The last time he was there in mid-June, Sugarman gave the former Packers star some exercises he could use following arm surgery.

A Vikings source who has been in contact with Favre recently reported that the surgery seven weeks ago was a complete success. With training camp opening 10 weeks after the surgery, Favre's arm should be back to full strength. Unless Favre changes his mind or there is a problem agreeing on a contract, there seems little doubt Favre will be in uniform when Vikings training camp opens in Mankato on July 31.

The contract Favre might already have agreed to includes a minimum guarantee, so the club won't get stuck with a big salary if he can't produce. But the incentives will be big if he does the job."

Vikings Williams Wall Can Play During Appeal

"Minnesota Vikings Kevin and Pat Williams can play while their court case over their use of the substance StarCaps plays out, and the NFL cannot step up testing of them during that time, Hennepin County District Judge Gary Larson said this morning in a 15-page ruling.

Larson also scheduled a hearing July 22 on the NFL's request to put the state court matter on hold pending the league's appeal of federal claims -- a process that could take months.

Lawyers for the two defensive linemen asked Larson to let them continue to play football. The NFL wanted the players to serve out their suspensions.

The NFL argued that a restraining order Larson issued late last year was dissolved by the actions of U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson."

Redskins- Shaun Alexander
Free agent Shaun Alexander says he hasn't ruled out a return to the NFL.

The rest of the league has, but Alexander isn't ready to admit it. The 32-year old says he's had "preliminary talks with a few teams." Alexander spent part of last season with the Redskins, finishing with 11 carries for 24 yards.

Steelers- Heath Miller
Profootballtalk.com picked up recent "scuttlebut" that the Steelers could make Heath Miller a salary cap casualty.

PFT then contacted a source with "intimate knowledge" of the team's decision making, however, and found that there's no truth to it. First of all, the cap savings to slash Miller's $800K salary would be minimal. Secondly, Miller is one of the top-ten all-around tight ends in the game. And third, the Steelers have all along been more likely to extend Miller's deal than terminate it.

Ravens- Joe Flacco
Football Scientist K.C. Joyner says Joe Flacco was the most improved rookie in the league during the second half of 2008.

Joyner says Flacco's decision making and vertical passing improved sharply down the stretch despite a tougher schedule. This all sounds promising, but keep in mind that coordinator Cam Cameron rarely allowed Flacco to throw inside the numbers, dramatically reducing the risk of turnover. We'll see how good Flacco is this season, when he's (presumably) allowed full QB duty.

Jets- Brett Favre
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Vikings trainer Eric Sugarman flew to Hattiesburg, MS on Wednesday to meet with free agent Brett Favre.

It's Sugarman's second visit to check on Favre's physical state; the two also met in mid-June. A Vikings source tells the Star-Trib that Favre's May biceps surgery "was a complete success" and that his arm will be 100% by the start of training camp. There's next to no doubt he'll be a Viking before then.

Lions- Brandon Pettigrew
The Lions were reportedly "pretty happy" with rookie Brandon Pettigrew's showing during OTAs and minicamps.

Pettigrew made a few "outstanding grabs" and showed good focus and competitiveness. The Lions won't ease Pettigrew in; he's going to be an every down player on day one. Just don't expect more than mid-range TE2 value.

Bengals- Chase Coffman
Bengals rookie TE Chase Coffman says he's "very close to being 100 percent" recovered from his senior-year foot fracture.

Coffman was cleared for 11-on-11 minicamp drills in late June and says he's still building back muscle in his lower body. Considering his injury and lack of blocking experience, we're still not expecting much in Coffman's first year.

Lions sixth-round pick Aaron Brown reportedly showed explosiveness as a ball carrier during spring practices.

Brown is fighting just to make the roster, but he's probably got an edge on old regime holdover Aveion Cason. The spot will come down to special teams play.

Cowboys- DeMarcus Ware
Cowboys OLB DeMarcus Ware expressed confidence Thursday that he'll be signing a long-term extension shortly.

Ware also confirmed that he won't hold out of training camp, despite entering a contract season. "(There's) nothing that's going to stop me from doing what I do best, and that's rush the passer and play well," said the reigning sacks leader. "There's no deadline at all. I picture myself a lifetime Cowboy."

Patriots- Wes Welker
Wes Welker recently changed agents from Vann McElroy to David Dunn of Athletes First.

Welker is signed through 2011, but he could easily argue that he's underpaid. No one has as many receptions over the last two years and Welker's '09 salary is just $1.65 million. He led the Pats in catches and receiving yards in 2008. Still, the the agent switch reportedly isn't aimed at getting a new deal.

Bears- Greg Olsen
Bears tight end coach Rob Boras said Greg Olsen will line up anywhere in the offense to try to create mismatches against a safety or linebacker.

All reports out of Chicago say Olsen and new QB Jay Cutler are working together well and are getting on the same page. Olsen is ultra-talented and has a real good chance at a breakout season.

Bucs wide receivers coach Richard Mann said that Brian Clark was the front-runner for the team's No. 3 WR job.

Giants- Brandon Jacobs
Giants RB Brandon Jacobs took a shot at Cowboys QB Tony Romo, saying "I don't think he's that good a passer, to be honest with you."

Jacobs made the comments on ESPN 1050 radio in New York. Everyone seems to be down on Romo these days, and Jacobs' words will only fan the flames of the rivalry.

Dolphins- Vontae Davis
Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland said that there had been just "preliminary discussions" about first-round pick Vontae Davis' contract.

Talks with second-round pick CB Sean Smith are expected to start this week. The Dolphins are building some nice depth in the defensive backfield. Most rookies taken in the first or second round won't be signed until training camp gets closer.

Seahawks- Walter Jones
Seahawks LT Walter Jones (microfracture surgery) was spotted running off to the side during minicamp.

According to Mike Sando of ESPN.com, Jones' biggest worry is his conditioning. Jones says the rehab on his knee is going well, but we'll have to wait until he gets some contact to be sure. He's obviously a key to the Seahawks' offense.

Browns- Brady Quinn
ESPN's James Walker confirms that Brady Quinn currently has the lead in the Browns' quarterback competition.

Walker says Quinn had a "decent, albeit not spectacular" spring, but Derek Anderson "struggled most of the way" before missing the last two OTA days with a calf injury. It looks like Quinn will take the first snap in training camp.

Jaguars- Tony Pashos
Incumbent Tony Pashos has a "significant" lead in his battle at right tackle with rookie Eben Britton.

It looks like Britton will only be a swing guard/tackle reserve in his first year, as he's not as skilled a run blocker as Pashos yet. Britton, the No. 39 pick overall, could move into the first team when Pashos turns 30 in 2010.

Jaguars- Sean Considine
Free agent pickup Sean Considine was reportedly the best looking safety on the field during Jaguars Organized Team Activities.

Jags.com suggests that Reggie Nelson's job could be in danger after the club acquired Gerald Sensabaugh. The reality is Considine is an athlete and bound to look good in shorts. He's never been durable when the pads go on.

The United Football League
The United Football League will have several different rules than the NFL, including giving both teams at least one possession in overtime.

It's like the college rule, which we're guessing will come to the big leagues soon enough. Quarterbacks under pressure will also be able to ground the ball in or outside the pocket (David Carr seems a perfect fit), and the UFL will have no "tuck rule." Penalties for touchdown dancing are more lenient, and instant replays will be decided in the booth, not by on-field referees.

Bengals- Andre Smith
SI.com's Ross Tucker expects the Bengals to use Andre Smith at right tackle permanently, rather than move him to the left side in time.

We actually believe Smith's best fit might be guard, but No. 6 overall was still quite high to pick a long-term right tackle. At 6'4 and lacking elite athleticism, Smith does profile better to the strong side if he's going to stay at tackle.

Packers- Jermichael Finley
Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin isn't ruling out Jermichael Finley beating out Donald Lee for the Packers' starting job.

"Jermichael is a much better player," Philbin said. "A year ago he was a 21-year-old kid from Texas. He didn’t know first base from third base. We're excited, he's making very good progress." Lee will play often either way because he's a better blocker, but Finley offers much more vertical ability.

Ravens- Steve McNair
Preliminary test results show that Steve McNair's mistress, Sahel Kazemi, fired the gun found at the scene of their deaths.

Tennessee state medical examiner Dr. Feng Li conducted autopsies on the bodies and found gunpowder on Kazemi's hands. The residue was traced back to the gun found under Kazemi's body, which she bought days earlier. Nashville police haven't made it official yet, but most signs continue to point towards a murder-suicide. More evidence will be revealed later this afternoon.

Patriots- Tom Brady
Patriots tight end Ben Watson says Tom Brady (ACL, MCL surgery) "has looked great" this offseason and worked "really hard."

"He's definitely poised to come back and have a great year," Watson added. "We're looking forward to having him back." We haven't heard a negative report on Brady's knee in six months. He appears right on track for Week 1.

Browns- Martin Rucker
Browns second-year TE Martin Rucker saw consistent first- and second-team reps during offseason OTAs.

He often ran in a two-tight end set with likely starter Robert Royal. Rucker is Cleveland's top receiving TE prospect, with only Steve Heiden (ACL surgery) to beat out for second string. Interestingly, Rucker is lined up in the slot in his photo on the Browns' website. The club needs help at that position.

Raiders- JaMarcus Russel
NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports that JaMarcus Russell has followed through on his promise to hold a private and voluntary passing camp with his receivers and it is currently ongoing.

La Canfora says Russell paid for the receivers' flights and calls it "a positive step" for the underachieving former first-round pick. Still, that this is a big deal just magnifies the overwhelming concern about Russell's work habits to this point. The Raiders are going to remain a run-first team no matter what Russell does in the offseason with Will Franklin and Chaz Schilens.

Texans- Dunta Robinson
The Texans remain far apart in contract discussions with unsigned franchise player Dunta Robinson, according to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

La Canfora expects Robinson to play the season on his one-year, $9.957 million tender. Still, he skipped mandatory offseason work and isn't a lock to show for the start of training camp. The Texans guarded themselves some by drafting mid-round corner help, but they need their top cover guy back badly.

Falcons- John Abraham
NFL Network's Steve Wyche passes along "rumblings" that Falcons RE John Abraham might want a new contract.

Wyche says Abraham won't target Albert Haynesworth money, but likely wants to be paid like Jared Allen (6 years/$73.26M). Abraham is coming off his best year (16.5 sacks, four forced fumbles), making second-team All Pro. At 31 with a $5 million '09 salary, however, Abraham doesn't have that great a case.
